'Into The Deep' Premiere And Whaling


Filmmaker Ric Burns will introduce his newest documentary "Into the Deep: America, Whaling & the World," Sunday, May 2 at Palmer Auditorium, Connecticut College, New London, 4 to 6:30 p.m.

Included in the visual story is the saga of the whale ship Essex, which was sunk when a sperm whale rammed it. Author Herman Melville was inspired by the true story, which he wove into the classic "Moby-Dick."

The PBS American Experience documentary will air at 9 p.m. May 10 on WGBH/PBS's "American Experience."

The screening for "Into the Deep: America, Whaling & the World" is free, donations accepted for Charles W. Morgan restoration project.

WGBH Boston and Steeplechase Films have granted Mystic Seaport the privilege of presenting the Connecticut premiere.

The whaleship Charles W. Morgan and Mystic Seaport staff appear in the film.
