To kick-off the 2011 market season The Higganum Village Farmers' Market organizers will host "A State of Farming - A Fresh Take on Local Food, Local Sustainability, and Farming in Connecticut" on Saturday, April 30. Held at the UConn Cooperative Extension Center, 1066 Saybrook Rd. (Route 154), in Haddam, doors open at 6:30 p.m.
(In Connecticut, Haddam is made up of three main smaller villages; Higganum, Tylerville, and Haddam Neck - which everyone knows, is across the river - not a part of East Haddam for the record, points out Deb Umba, a market organizer.)
Guest speakers include people from Quintessential Gardens at Fort Hill Farm in Thompson; Farmer's Cow; Haddam Conservation Commission. Music from Tom Callinan, Connecticut State Troubadour, and author and writer Steve Grant.
The movie "Fresh" will follow. The film gives voice to the " . . . incredible creativity of individuals who are devoting their lives to producing food differently,"as quoted in EcoSalon. The movie depicts a very hopeful future regarding food production in our country.
Tickets are $10; $8 with a non-perishable food item for the Haddam Food Bank.
