Farmland Event; Fair Season Full Tilt

Hartford County 4-H Fair is Aug. 19 to Aug. 21 at the Four Town Fairgrounds, Egypt Road, Somers, Connecticut.

Deerfield Valley Farmers' Day Fair, Wilmington, Vermont, is ongoing to Sunday, Aug. 21. Children's lawnmower pull, horse draw/horse pull, car show, crafts - and a watermelon seed spitting contest plus a pee wee midway for the small fry.

The Bridgewater Country Fair now through Sunday, Aug. 21 (in Connecticut) is sponsored by volunteer firefighters. Don't miss the fireman's muster on Saturday; ox draw on Sunday. All the traditional exhibits, rides, livestock and a pet parade by children (Saturday 9:30 a.m.) - plus pig racing, a pie-eating contest, and a lumberjack competition too.

National Sheep And Cattle Dog Finals

National Sheep and Cattle Finals entries must be postmarked no later than Aug. 1, and no entries will be accepted after that date.

Last date to cancel entries is Sept. 1 in order to have fees returned.

Hands-On Queen (Bee) Workshop

A course serves as both an introduction to rearing queen honeybees, and as hands-on support for those that have done extensive reading and research, but may need a little guidance.

Each student raises their own queens (from “soup to nuts”) as part of the curriculum. Included with the $200 course fee is all the equipment needed to graft and raise queens on your own with your own resources.

Dates are June 12 through July 3, Leominster, Mass. Limited to 10 participants per session. Other dates TBA.
