Learn How To Use A Chainsaw And Maintain It

As interest in sustainable private woodlot management and cultivation of shiitake mushrooms and other forest-grown crops grows, so does the need for information on safe tree cutting techniques and operation of chainsaws.

This spring the University of Vermont (UVM) Extension New Farmer Project and the Women's Agricultural Network have teamed up to offer a two-part workshop at two locations. The instructor is Jessica Ricketson of Burlington, an experienced sawyer who regularly trains trail crews and students on chainsaw safety in the field.

The workshops will be held at the Larson Farm, Wells, on April 30 (session one, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; session two: 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.) and the Center for Technology, Essex Junction, on May 23 (session one, 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.) and June 1 (session two, 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.). Participants may attend both or either session at either site.

The registration fee is $65 for both sessions or $40 for a single session. A limited amount of financial assistance is available.

Registrations are due by April 25 for the Wells site and May 18 for Essex Junction. Preregistration is required as space is limited.

The first session, "Chainsaw Parts and Maintenance," will focus on the basic principles of operating a chainsaw including how it works, the correct way to mix fuel and maintenance from sharpening and cleaning to replacing the pull-cord if it breaks. Personal protective gear, saw safety and methods for starting the saw also will be covered.

Session two, "Bucking and Limbing Logs Safely," provides instruction on safe and effective cutting techniques. Through hands-on practice, participants will learn safe and efficient techniques for bucking (cutting the downed tree into appropriate log lengths), limbing (removal of branches) and moving logs safely on a log pile as well as using the proper tools for lifting logs and how to read binds.
